As Edward VI's Catholic half-sister and daughter of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragorn, Mary was the heir to the English throne upon the death of Edward. She was very dedicated to the papacy, yet wanted to marry her cousin, Philip of Spain. She prosecuted English Protestantism, burning Anglican bishops, including Cranmer, causing many reformers to flee abroad into Europe, including John Calvin. She passed away in 1558, and was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth I.
